Everything that I have written in this book has been from my personal experience and what has worked for me. I am not a doctor or Chinese herbalist, but I have done extensive research in order to treat myself. I am sharing what I found.
Normally when you go to an herbalist or practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, they will prescribe a whole set of herbs that go together. I was just interested in finding the key ingredients that zeroed in on my specific problem and was able to provide relief and healing from the pain.
This is the root of a tree that is very sticky and has an herbal, earthy, and slightly sweet taste and aroma. You can find it in Chinese herbal stores. I sourced mine from a shop in Chinatown in New York City, but you can also order it here. Simply add boiling hot water to a single slice of rehmannia root and drink after a couple minutes. You can continuing adding water to the same root slice throughout the day.
I must admit that I found this herb after the pain of my anal fissures had already resolved. Even though the pain is gone, I do still have internal hemorrhoids that are above the dentate line and am treating myself for it.
When I started drinking this tea for the first time, I could actually feel the hemorrhoids shrinking in my body. It was an eery feeling, and I am not saying that this is what was exactly happening, but the fullness that I felt in my rectal area felt like it was drying up and shriveling. The next day my stool came out soft and easy. In subsequent days I noticed other effects – my eyes would be itchy and red for a week, and then start clearing up again. I believe this was a way my body was clearing another channel to drive out heat from the body.
Burdock root has a mild earthy and slightly sweet taste to it. In its fresh form it has a similar texture to a carrot, but is slightly harder and woodier. It is delicious when cooked – simply peel, julienne the root and braise it in soy sauce, some raw sugar and a squeeze of lemon, then finish with a drizzle of sesame oil and crushed sesame seeds. However, it is more concentrated and beneficial if you drink it as a tea. Burdock root tea has a cooling effect on the body and purifies your blood, along with your liver and kidney. I take fresh burdock root and slice it into very thin coins, and then put them in an oven overnight on the lowest setting to dehydrate the slices.
When I first made and drank this tea, within minutes I noticed a warm sensation on my skin, as if the heat from inside my body was escaping to the surface. This feeling usually lasts for about twenty minutes of so. It is a very comforting sensation and the first sips of the tea are quite delicious and subtle. You can continue to fill up the cup with more water several times, and also snack on the burdock root itself after you have exhausted all the nutrients and flavor from the tea.
I believe you can order burdock root tea online in bags or in large chunks, but I found that making it from fresh root was the most beneficial. Peel the fresh root, slice it into thin coins, and dehydrate them in a low temperature oven or dehydrator.
Lotus Root Tea
Very similar in its effect on the body is lotus root tea. It has a different taste, is a little brighter than the burdock root tea, and gives slightly more body to the steeped tea, almost a hint of a milky texture. It is also quite tasty and is responsible for cleansing and purifying the blood, as well as clearing heat from the kidney, liver, and lungs.
I like to alternate this tea with the burdock root tea every other day or couple days, just to get more variety in flavor and for the body to receive healing from multiple sources.
The preparation for this tea is nearly the same as for burdock root – take a fresh root, slice it very thin and dehydrate it in the oven. Again, you can probably find this online, but I make it fresh, and if you would like more information on where to source ingredients, please get in touch and I will do my best to help you out.
I have hesitated to include this therapy, because it is very drastic, but I have found it to be one of the most effective treatments for anal fissure. Essentially, the idea is to create a suppository or paste that you apply to the anal area. This essentially supercharges the circulation to the rectum and allows for the direct absorption of antioxidants and other nutrients and compounds to the area.
The only downside is that, for about ten minutes, it is excruciatingly painful and the area will sting unbearably. However, after this time passes, you will notice the pain subside and be able to go about your business.
The way to prepare for the garlic treatment is to take one clove of garlic, smash it against a cutting board with the side of a knife, peel it, and smash it some more until it is flattened. Take a pinch of the smashed garlic and mix it with some olive oil (or coconut oil). Apply this rough paste to the rectum. You can alternate days where you push it into the anal cavity and when you just apply it to the area where the fissure it, outside of the sphincter.
Leave the paste there for at least ten minutes or so. It will be incredibly excruciating and you will curse the world, wondering how you were duped into such a dumb idea. However, I urge you to withhold taking it off until ten minutes or so elapses. In the middle of the unspeakable pain, the pain will suddenly stop and you will feel an incredible sense of relief in the area. It will also feel as if the tissue lining the rectal area is getting thicker.
If the pain is unbearable and you must make it stop, remove the garlic from the area. It will continue to sting as the juices and oil linger, but after a couple minutes the pain will die down. You will still retain the benefits, and even keeping it on for a couple seconds is better than not doing the treatment at all.
I would suggest doing this treatment three to four times a week, or every other day. I admit it is very intense, so having a day of rest in between treatments will help to space it out a bit and prepare yourself. I must say that after doing this treatment, I noticed some immediate physical changes within days and the area began drying up and shifting around as the circulation improved.
While we are on the subject of very intense treatments, here is another treatment that I had done which helped. The purpose of doing this cleanse is to bring balance to your liver and gallbladder so that they can function more efficiently, in turn “cooling” down the organs and the system that is forming the hemorrhoids and anal fissure. I would not recommend doing it if you are at the height of pain or before undergoing any of the other treatments above, because there are aspects of it that may cause a lot of pain. Specifically, you will undergo an induced diarrhea, which may inflame your anal fissure.
The gallbladder is connected to the liver and secretes bile into your food as it passes from the stomach to the small intestine, which breaks down fats and other compounds. When we are in poor health and have problems with digestion due to mismatched diet, our gallbladders can get congested and not function properly. Think of a clogged tube that is trying to force liquid through it.
This cleanse works to expel the gallstones in the gallbladder and liver, allowing the organs to do their job in breaking down food and toxins. I also believe it has many side benefits, such as reducing or eliminating allergies, clearing and moisturizing the skin, and ultimately leaving you feeling less congested in your digestive tract.
The basic technique is to fast starting at noon, drinking apple cider and water throughout the day (and week leading up to it, if possible). Drinking apple cider has a softening effect on your gallstones. After six o’clock, you begin a two hour practice of ingesting a series of small cups of lemon and olive oil. It is essentially two cups of high quality olive oil and one cup of fresh lemon juice that is broken into eight servings every fifteen minutes. In between sessions you lie on your right side as the lemon juice softens up the gallstones and the olive oil causes your system to shoot bile out, thereby pushing the gallstones with it.
I recommend getting a very good, cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil and squeezing fresh lemons – it will be worth it in terms of the effect on your system and the experience ingesting it. As you are lying down you may even feel a sensation of gallstones shooting out into your digestive system. Use small disposable plastic cups, measure everything out and leave the cups on a tray next to where you will be lying down. Do all this beforehand – after you start the process you will not want to bother with any pouring or measuring.
- 2 cups extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 16 small disposable cups (preferable, although not necessary)
- A half gallon of fresh apple cider, preferably unpasteurized and UV treated
- At 12 pm, begin fasting. Drink lots of water and as much apple cider as you desire, in order to soften the gallstones.
- Some time after 6 pm, find a comfortable area where you can lie down on your side.
- Pour the lemon juice and olive oil evenly into individual cups – there should be 8 equal cups of lemon juice and 8 equal cups of olive oil. There should be twice as much oil to each serving of lemon juice. Have the cups at hand where you will be laying down.
- Drink one small cup of the lemon juice, followed by one cup of the olive oil. Immediately lie down on your right side and relax for 15 minutes.
- Repeat the process seven more times, every 15 minutes, until you are finished with all the cups. This should take about 2 hours.
- Try to keep laying on your right side as long as possible and go to sleep for the night in this position.
I will admit that it is not a pleasant experience – it can be quite nauseating, in fact – and I never thought I would ever dislike olive oil so much during the process. But if you curl up with a casual book or watch a movie, the entire experience moves by quite quickly and then you can just fall asleep afterward.
You should not plan anything strenuous for the next day, as you will be going to the bathroom quite frequently. After you flush out whatever food that is remaining in your system, you can expect something akin to diarrhea with other items scattered throughout. This is the combination of lemon juice and olive oil, and the gallstones. If you are brave enough to examine the toilet, you will notice that there are a variety of sizes of green “stones.” These stones were lodged in your gallbladder, keeping it from functioning the way it is supposed to.
When I did a gallbladder cleanse for the first time, I was shocked to see stones that were literally three quarters of an inch big. It was quite impressive that stones of this size were actually jammed in my gallbladder, and quite satisfying to know that they were no longer there. Trying squeezing a stone (after washing it thoroughly, of course), and notice how hard it is. That was actually stuck in your gallbladder, along with the hundreds of other little pebbles.
Take it easy breaking your fast with an easy, small meal. Chances are you will still feel pretty nauseous, but by the end of the day, and after you have finished expelling all the gallstones, you will feel much better. Get another good night’s rest, and when you wake up, you will be a different person – you will feel lighter and your abdominal area will feel much less congested. Plus, your skin will feel incredibly buoyant and healthy due to the quantity of olive oil you consumed. If possible, it is incredibly beneficial to do this cleanse every couple months, but even just doing it once will make a huge difference in the quality of your life.
Again, it is important to note that this cleanse is meant to affect your long term health. The gallbladder cleanse is not meant to directly fix the problem of pain in your anus. In the short term it may actually cause more pain, due to the frequency of defecation, along with the diarrhea. If you decide to do this cleanse, I would recommend waiting until the pain level for your fissure is more manageable.
